Huelva city is one of the least well known provincial capitals in Andalusia, yet from our point of view the most authentic. So many people
who come to visit decide to stay. It must be something to do with the people, the way of life. Or maybe it's because of its size, all the
advantages of a city without being impersonal.
The relative present day unimportance of Huelva is however strongly contrasted with its past. Huelva is one of the oldest settlements in the
West, going back over five thousand years. So many civilisations have passed through looking for fame and fortune from the province’s mineral
resources. Nowadays there’s a new buzz about it as it gains confidence in the future. Great as a base camp for visiting the coast, the Sierra,
the Columbus Route or for our many inland adventures to see and learn about authentic Spain.
Keep in mind that in Huelva, like in any other provincial capital, a large part of the cultural life of the area coalesces, and it’s not unusual
for a visitor’s stay to coincide with one or other fair, festival or event of interest, whether cultural (as described above), food-related
(the prawn fair) or sport-related (the tennis King’s Cup). One needs only to find out what’s on and arrange to go.
Amongst all the monuments you can visit in Huelva you shouldn´t miss the Santuario de la Cinta (15th century), the Cathedral (17th C.), the Museum,
San Pedro´s church (14th C.)...
More recent, but also interesting, are the remains of the British presence in the province: Tharsis and Tinto wharves, built in the 19th century,
used to load minerals on ships to Great Britain, as well as the "Barrio Reina Victoria" (Queen Victory´s neighbourhood), built in the early 20th
century, at the request of the Rio Tinto Company Ltd., by Price, Morgan, Aguado and Pérez Carasa, to house the mining company’s workers. The
streets and houses were modelled on the British architecture of the period.
You can also have a look at Moret Park, Andalusia’s biggest greenbelt park, spread over 70 hectares. It was reopened in January 2007.
